Comedy legend Johnny Leland has called in his chips. He’s organizing a charity telethon and needs TV cop Richard Belzer to cohost. Not one to let down an old friend—much less the guy who gave him his start in stand-up comedy—The Belz gets ready to head out to Las Vegas when he receives a mysterious phone call from Paul Venchus, a newspaper colleague from way back. Twenty-six years ago, beautiful starlet Bridget Burgeon was found dead in her Hollywood apartment. Sleeping pills, the coroner ruled, but many questioned whether her relationship with handsome, up-and-coming California congressman Mark Kaye played a role. Conspiracy theorists have been working overtime ever since, and Venchus claims that he has made a breakthrough in the case.

Something's happening in the underworld of Cook County. Tensions are rising between two rival drug lords, and the streets are their battleground. Sergeant Frank Leal and his former partner, Olivia “Ollie” Hart, get involved when one of their informants turns up dead with his ear cut off. When one drug lord decides it’s time to eliminate the competition completely, the takeover becomes very hostile indeed. As blood flows in the gutter and retaliation rules the day, Leal and Hart have to stop two criminal armies before they meet in an all-out war with the innocents caught in between.

Here’s the cover for the book I co-wrote with Law & Order SVU star Richard Belzer. It’s a unique twist on the mystery/thriller form with the Belz being written into the novel as a character. For all you who are asking the question, What’s Richard Belzer really like? I can tell you he’s a great guy and just as witty and acerbic in real life as he is on TV and in the book.
We’ve got a second novel completed that picks up where this one lets off, so grab it while you can. It’s a fun read.
Some anthologies I'm in:
Heroes of Ancient Greece
Any fan of Greek myths and the old sword and sandal movies of the early sixties will love this book. It features my story, "Hercules and the Spawn of the Titans."
At the Scene of the Crime
This is a collection of CSI-type stories written by some of today’s best crime writers. In addition to a fine entry by my writing partner, Julie Hyzy (“Five Sorrowful Mysteries”) I had the pleasure of working with editor Dana Stabennow, whose work I’ve long admired. My story in this one is about forensic dentistry, and is called, "Articulation of Murder."
On a Raven’s Wing
I was deeply flattered to be asked to contribute a story in tribute to the master, Edgar Allan Poe, with this special anthology by some of the very best writers in the filed. It was also distinct honor to work with one of the giants of mystery, Mr. Stuart Kaminsky, who expertly edited this book. Not only is Stuart one of my all-time favorite writers, but he’s been my idol for many, many years. My story is called "The Golden Bug."

Private eye Ron Shade and news reporter Alex St. James nearly ran into each other in the final chapters of their respective adventures, A Final Judgment and Deadly Interest. Little did they know that their chance encounter would place them on a future collision course. Now, in Dead Ringer, their first adventure together, Shade is looking for Bob Bayless, a dead-and-buried executive who was recently spotted playing blackjack in Vegas, while Alex fights off the attentions of a creepy mortician who's a little too eager to show Alex his backroom moves. Although it seems their two cases couldn't be further apart, clues - and bodies - start adding up to tell a different tale. When Alex and Shade connect, the two find themselves involved in a combined case so convoluted, that even the dead don't stay buried for long.
